We are making the long long drive home to West Texas right now, 4 hours down only 8 to go!
Grace has been much better than expected, keeping busy watching Toy Story 3 and napping, we'll see if it continues to go this well through the night.
We just celebrated Gracie's 2nd and my 25th birthday last week, holy cow how fast did those last 2 years go! She got plenty of princess things and shoes, her 2 favorites ( I hope she's always this easy to shop for). There's a few (unedited) pictures of the party, and yes she insisted on wearing sneakers with that frilly dress. Being our social butterfly, completely opposite Momma and Daddy, Gracie loved seeing all our friends and the fact that everyone walked in with a present for her had nothing to do with that :) I've learned alot these last two years but mostly to relax and let be, I think she ate goldfish, cupcakes and strawberry for dinner.
As we enter into the Christmas season I love seeing the joy and delight in her eyes when we turn on the tree lights, see a snowman at the mall, drive around and see Christmas lights or hear her sing Happy Birthday Jesus. 90% of the people we run into ask her what Santa is giving her on Christmas and I found myself thinking about the whole Santa issue, do we play into it or do we use this time to teach our daughter the real concept if Christmas? We decided to do the latter, sure Santa is not going anywhere and I'm not saying he should, be Im not going to be signing From: Santa on any gifts or talk about a chubby guy who drops in to hand out free stuff every Christmas Eve. Don't judge me, if you do Santa, that's great and I'm not judging you, but its not for us. We've been talking about how Jesus was born in a manger and how he came to save the world, to save Mommy and Daddy and Gracie and everyone who believes in him. And no my children will not be the ones to ruin your kids Christmas, no classrooms full of children crying because someone said Santa isn't real, I promise.
Well were are getting close to the halfway mark and my butt is numb and my belly is rumbling! But it's not because I'm hungry... I'll give you a second to think about it.. Ok. If you haven't guessed or haven't heard, we are expecting!! Yup, I'm due late April with our second little girl! 2 little princess! You might want to avoid our house in about 14 years :) I'm 22 weeks and in the sweet spot between the exhausting and sickness of the first trimester and the hugeness of the third trimester. So as we enter into the last Christmas as a family of 3 I'm a little sad to see this time of having an only child end but I'm very excited to see the relationship between my daughters bloom and welcome another blessing into our arms.
My fingers are getting tired typing on my phone so I'm going to call it a day. Hope that kinda catches y'all up on where we're at. I plan to jump back on the blogging bandwagon, so talk to y'all soon!
Well I have been up to my eyeballs in paint and stain and a palm sander. Some good friends gave us a dining set they no longer needed and instead of going to goodwill they thought of me. By the way, isn't nice when people think you can make something out of nothing and give you stuff for free :) Hubby picked it up after school about a month ago and it sat in the garage until I could find some motivation to tackle it, I had planned on selling the set once my new company Christian Creations is up and running (SOON I hope) but Hubby liked the chairs so much we decided to keep them. The table on the other hand will probably be sold (still finding the motivation to finish that). The chairs are solid pine and pretty comfy and free, what could be better? After a quick sanding I started painting...this is where the post title comes in. After the third chair I was about to shoot myself. Those spindles were killing me and I saw that they were going to need two coats of paint. But lucky me I survived, only to realize they looked too plain and would probably get filthy in a few days time. So, I channeled my inner Pottery Barn designer (didn't you know we all have one of those? it's called potterybarn.com )and got out the sander and some stain. I sanded down places that would naturally wear and applied a thin walnut stain. Working in small areas, I wiped on the stain and quickly wiped it away with a clean cloth, the darker you want it the longer you keep it on. And finally finished them with a coat of spray polyurethane. All in all, I love how they turned out but I have already asked for a paint sprayer for Christmas... Some of you might think I'm being dramatic, and to ya'll I would say some very not nice things. August in New Orleans is probably what hell feels like. So here is some pictures to walk you through the process:

Baby girl had a really good nap today (aka 2 hours) so after reading lonnymag and getting a little motivation to do something I decided to make some summery pillow covers for a pair of feather pillows I found at GW awhile back. I did a quick google search (which is how I find out anything) for easy pillow covers and came across a few but I wanted something easier than easy so I made up my own way. I was really trying to avoid hemming because I hate it so I used a flat sheet I found at a garage sale this weekend and used the hemmed sides for the envelope edges. Here is how I did it:

FRONT:
1. Measure pillow insert and add 1 inch to each side for seam allowance. For example, my pillow was 22"x22" so I cut out a piece of fabric at 23"x23".
BACK:
* Pay attentions to where the hem is if your using a sheet. Make sure it is on the shorter side (the 23" side in my case) so you can use the premade hem.
1. Add 1 inch to the pillow dimensions on one side and 5 inches to the other side. So my 22" square pillow needed a rectangle 23"x27".
2. Cut your rectangle in half length wise. My 23"x27" rectangle was cut in half and became 2 pieces each with the dimensions 23" by 13 1/2".
3. Pin the 2 back flaps overlapping each other to the front piece wrong sides out.

I have no idea what I'm doing but baby girl is loving sitting on this thing. She's got the "take diaper off and sit" down but we haven't mastered going in the potty. We've gone on the floor around the potty, many times, but not in; but hey you gotta start somewhere huh. I don't think she wants to get the potty dirty is the thing (she is a first-born, very meticulous just like momma). We talked about it and talked about it and I would ask every 10 minutes if she had to potty always receiving the vigorous shake of the head no and realized this is going to be a long trip. Later, out of the corner of my eye I watched her put a dolly on the potty, pick her up, look at the booty end and said "poo poo" and put her back on the potty. I never knew such simple things like poop and where to put it would boost my confidence as a mommy 1 trillion percent! Doesn't it feel awesome when you teach your child something and you see them "getting it"!

*oops, this was supposed to be posted yesterday but things got hectic with party planning!
With the long weekend comes lots of home improvement projects which lucky for me hubby enjoys doing. If you know me or have been reading this blog for a little while you know that we moved into our newly built house in January...what home improvement projects could we possibly have you ask. Well, our house is a Katrina house here in New Orleans, actually the levee break is about 3 houses down from us, the levee is directly in our backyard so when it broke our house was a goner. We are lucky to say that we were not living in the house at the time so we didn't lose any personal belongings. The house was striped down to the studs when we bought it so we had a lot of free reign in how we wanted our home to look and we love how it turned out. The outside is a different story, the yard has been a field of weeds for sometime and so the boys got to work this weekend. They started out by cutting down the 15 feet tall weed trees (seriously) then went on to making flower beds. It was a TON of work made extra difficult since it is summer time here in New Orleans which means 95 degree weather, 100% humidity and random rain showers but it's almost done, we just have the pathways left to do!
I've never been more quiet in my life but I'm sure she will be up before I finish this sentence. Nope, ok let's do this fast! Yesterday I shared my story of finding this bench:

she's a looker, yes I know.

I sanded down the legs and gave them a coat of primer before spray painting them with Krylon Gloss Dover White (I buy mine at Kmart, it's about 2 dollars cheaper then other places). I chose a green and white checkered fabric that was sitting in my craft closet (Joann's clearance $2/yd score, BTW check out this fabric I just got yesterday for $3/yd! I'm thinking new nursery drapes one day).

Pulling each side taut I used a staple gun to attach the fabric onto the top, I made sure to staple into the wood for extra security. To cover the staples I hot glued natural twisted cord to trim it out the bottom. At this point I was covered in sweat working in our 1000 degree garage and called it done and went to find some air conditioning. The next day when I went to bring the bench inside I looked at it and it was "too perfect" so I got out the sander and went to town, I figure it's going to get beat up and busted up sooner rather than later anyways. So here she is, the Sweet Nothings Bench:

Those days where you seriously contemplate if it is possible to lose all of your hair in a single day, those days where everything that could go awry did, those days where you HAVE to get out of the house asap. So I packed up baby girl and headed down the street to the local thrift store. I saw a storm rolling in and knew we had to hurry so I lugged my 50 pound diaper bag and 25 pound toddler into the store looking like a hot mess. As we walk around, a miracle happens and she became silent and happy, I don't say anything for fear that I would jinx the peace. I put an old school wooden puzzle into the cart that I know a Texas friend will love, and find an old globe that will go perfectly over our tv corner (I'm going for The Pleated Poppy look), a wooden tray and a terribly painted stool. The peace is starting to wear off so out come the crackers, peace restored but the storm is getting closer and I can hear the thunder settling in. As I head to the checkout counter I spot an old bench in the very far corner of the store; I make a beeline for the bench thinking there is no way it's sturdy and if it is then it's going to be more than I want to spend. Very sturdy and pretty cheap! I tell the cashier I'll take and and check out. As I pull my car around the lightning picks up and I hurry to cram this thing into my little volkswagon. The guys helping me looked at me like I had lost my mind as we try it this way, that way, move the carseat and try this way....We finally get the dang thing in my car and we head home. Hubby's truck is in the driveway when we get home, Yay, someone to unload this thing! Even he was impressed by my find. He puts it in the garage aka workshop aka mess of all messes and just as we head into the nice air conditioned house the skies open up and it begins to pour down rain.
Here she is before her makeover (yup, those are the other finds in the bottom corner). Stay tuned tomorrow for her big reveal!

It wasn't until later that night as I'm praying with baby girl before bed that I realize how amazing the rain is; it cleans away the mud and the grime and lets things begin clean and new, just as the blood of Christ that poured down the cross washed away our sin and welcomed us into the kingdom of God. Praise God!
I like things done, finished and homey so this was a bit of a depressing room to see everyday. When we got back from our long vacation I couldn't take it anymore and started to put stuff up and accessorize and this is what it looks like now.

Thrifted mirrors and frames painted white with green accents fill up the large wall behind the dining table (The print is a Joann's clearance bin find) and our DIY oversized chalkboard fills the wall opposite the french doors. These doors let in a ton of light, especially around dinner time and it gets HOT! This curtains are actually tapestry throws I found at Target in the college dorm section on clearance years ago and have traveled with us since. Hubby mounted the hardware so the drapes would just skim the floor, I am not patient enough nor do I have the math skills to do that so thankfully hubby's strengths are my weaknesses.

Our table was found on Craigslist and after bringing it home and doing a little research we found that it is actually a really expensive table someone put a formica top on. The plan is to have an oval marble (loveeeeee carrara marble) made for the top so we can fit more that 4 people around it. The gray chairs we're found at Goodwill in a horrible oak-ish finish (I say oak-ish because it wasn't oak and it wasn't paint but it was bad) and I used some paint we had on had to refinish them (the gray is the color of hubby's office/wildlife preserve). The wood chairs were found at a hotel liquidation center, recovered in painters drop cloth and trimmed out in black ribbon.
We are back home, finally! We've been away for nearly a month seeing family in West Texas and going lots and lots of weddings. Just about everyone we know is getting married this summer so it felt like a high school reunion each weekend. But anyways, one of my close friends got married this past weekend and I decided to throw an impromptu bridal/bachelorette party.

drink station

pudding cups

That's where this chair came from. Hubby thought I was joking when he saw the tired goldish, stained and flattened seat and continued on with our walk. Nope, this sucker had potential and it was free so even if it couldn't be helped it could go right back in the trash and I wouldn't feel bad about wasting money. I added some foam to the seat and covered it in painter's drop cloth I had in my craft stash. That was 6 months ago. This morning I decided it was a little plain jane and recovered the seat in a ikat fabric from the clearance bin and added a coat of purple gloss spray paint. Now she's got some personality!
Beautiful white sand beaches, amazing weather and no med school! We spent the week lounging in our bathing suits going between the beach and the outlet mall across the street. Now it's back to real life and a trip back to Texas in a few days for wedding season. But my minds already on next years trip! Have a great week, sorry DIY projects have been slow and will probably continue to be throughout the summer but stick with me.
Anyways, it got a little windy at market last night and a pair of mirrors I had refinished fell over and one cracked :( but I didn't want to throw it away because it had a really neat frame.

(the other mirror that survived the crash with only a few bumps and bruises)

Fast forward to this morning playing in baby girls' room. I've wanted to do a collection of art in their but didn't know where to start...brain storm! (yes, that is an Imagination Movers reference, lame...yes) I have a really neat cracked mirror and a really cute fat quarter.... Voila!

You could do this with any cracked mirror or really ugly picture just be careful removing the mirror. I used duck tape to fasten the fabric to the cardboard backing of the frame that way I can always change it out.

I found the gray frame (previously speckled gold) at Goodwill awhile back and layered it with a DIY glittered handprint. Looking at that little hand everyday makes me smile especially since I know the mischief it gets into.
Being that I am crazy, I sewed like mad and finished Monday afternoon with piles of burpee cloths, blankets and onsies. I was a little hesitant to do it though since my first try back in Texas led to complete failure. COMPLETE. I sold one thing...and that was only because the ladies kid had peed his pants and I was the only vendor selling children's pants. True story. But you never succeed unless you try, or so I've been told. Wish me luck...

I found this recipe awhile back but it looked a little time intensive for me (anything that takes longer than an hour is out in this house) so I bookmarked it and forgot about it. Then dental school finals started. AKA hell weeks. Poor hubby doesn't have time to see us much, let alone sleep so I thought these might be a nice "hang in there babe" treat. They are time intensive, not going to lie but they are freaking delicious and so worth the time.

I used cake mix for the batter instead of handmade to save some time and I didn't wait hours for the centers to freeze because I have a toddler and if she gives me time to do it then it's getting done...FAST. The icing was the best part for us, not too peanut buttery and not too sweet; just creamy fluffy goodness. We like them cold so all the veggies in the fridge had to make way for cupcakes for a week :)

The only thing was...I lost all but 1 regular size cupcake pan in the move; but I found a ton of minis. So we had enough mini cupcakes to last us a week.

I wasn't sure what I was going to do with them but baby girl is all about shoes and bags so I knew they would come in handy. Fast forward to this week, I need a birthday gift on the cheap for a little friend of baby girls. This friend L.O.V.E.S Elmo and lucky for me I found a handful of Elmo books at Target in the dollar section and scored another book from TJMaxx for a few books. I was just going to wrap them up and be done but I had the time (meaning I didn't want to unload the dishwasher, do laundry, vaccum....) to do something more. So I grabbed a green tote, some embroidery floss and a button and went to town. The finished product is a personalized reading bag full of booky goodness all for about $7!
But we found some time to finish up the humongo chalkboard that's been living in our garage for a few weeks and hung it yesterday, love it! Not going to lie though, I was terrified to write on it at first but I got over it quick and baby girl has already created some master pieces as well. Side note: I've been taking photos of those masterpieces with her proudly posing by to make a little book that documents how big she's getting :( Can't we start over and go back to being a tiny little thing....)
So far it looks pretty awesome in my head :) Hubby was sweet enough to get the materials last night (although I think he will take any excuse to go to the improvement store) and they are sitting in the garage. My mom is coming in town this weekend so hopefully this thing will be done within a few days!
I found a dingy two tier side table (I think its an old school telephone table, ps. how wierd that our kids won't really ever know a heavy handheld homephone...) at GW for $4.99. Sanded it down and painted the base coat a creamy milk color. I found this template at sunset.com and as soon as baby girl went down for bed I headed out to the garage. It only took me about 30 minutes and since I used paint I already had, the total cost was the price of the table, $5! I didn't take photos but it's super easy.
It is nice to hear that you're trying out some of these projects! I would love to see some pictures of the Mason Jar Soap Pump ya'll are making :) Really though, your comments are very sweet and thoughtful and I truely appreciate them, especially when baby girl is throwing a fit because I won't let her climb on the coffee table (who knows where that would lead) or I find the puppies eating dangerous pre-Katrina remnants they dig out of the backyard (a handful of Mardi Gras beads mixed with rocks seem to be their favorite (our home was flooded in Katrina by the way))

Anyways, we found this window during the same trip we found this beauty. I wasn't sure where it would go but I thought the panes were really interesting and for $5 what the heck.

It sat on the front porch for awhile before I finally made it to Lowe's to look for mirror to back it with. But, I'm not about to pay $45 for a mirror, so it sat some more on the front porch. Then, I found this magical paint:

Looking Glass Mirror-Like Paint by Krylon. It looks like mirror when you spray it onto the back of glass for a fraction of the cost! It is pricey compared to regular spray paint ($11 for a 6 oz can) but I found mine at Michael's and used a coupon. One can was just enough for this window. Simply clean the glass, and spray light even coats (about 5 or 6), I didn't even tape it off. It dries super fast so this puppy was done in about 30 minutes. We decided to hang it in the dining room since there wasn't a single thing on the walls but it's looking a bit lonely.

I thought maybe a plate wall around it but hubby says that reminds him of his MeMaw. So like anyone, I've been looking for plates with man stuff like fish on them :) I found a really cute manly one at Goodwill for less than a buck but being ever so graceful, that thing was shattered less than a day later. Any ideas? My tabletop is looking a bit sad too, just some dishes and flowers...any ideas for that too?

It was tucked away in the corner with the paneled side facing out but a quick peek around to the other side revealed this beautiful antiqued glass. And in the truck it went. I should of taken a before picture but I was scrambling to finish it so it could go in the house before we had house guest arrive (anyone else decide to do a project hours before you have people coming over?) I sanded and scraped the paint off; it was so chippy that it was really easy to get it all off. Thankfully, because I'm impatient! We could of left it on because it was actually really pretty but being an old door I'm sure it was lead paint and we kinda like having our baby girl around, so out with the paint. But I was looking at it this morning and thought it needed something...

My hubby is in grad school and basically lives at school and I don't have the patience to hang things level, soooo, there's a whole lot of nothing on the walls. But, I've found things I can do that don't require any patience or skill :) Here are some ways I'm decorating in unexpected places:
The sign is also a goodwill find that got a coat of paint and letters outlined in sisal rope. You can't tell from the pictures (sorry, still learning) but both are distressed...I might have to take the sander to them a bit more though. I have some faux curtain panels made but I have to get a tension rod that fits the window. I'll show ya'll soon!
